Nelson Family - Missoula, Montana

"Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art... It has no survival value; rather is one of those things that give value to survival."
- C. S. Lewis

I met the Nelson family at a playgroup I started to meet other moms in 2010 and Krystal and I clicked right away. I instantly felt like I could trust her, and for a while we swapped babysitting of our two kiddos. Since then, we've become much closer. And I mean that in the most literal sense imaginable.

When my daughter came 3 weeks early in September, it was Krystal who was right by my side when no one else was able to be with me. It was Krystal who took me to my last appointment, who walked a few miles with me that evening, who insisted on making me stay at her home because of how far I was progressed, who was up with me at 2am when I went into instant and fast labor, and who held my hair, massaged my back, and encouraged me through an intense and fast delivery. Elina will always know her as Aunty Krystal.

It takes a truly special person to put the needs of others so far ahead of their own, and Krystal selflessly gives herself to everyone and everything, and I am so thankful to call her my friend. It's more than that though, everyone in her family has been so welcoming to mine, they really feel more like family. I am missing them something awful here in North Dakota, but I know we'll stay close, despite the miles, and I look forward to our visits back to Missoula to see them!

A new life in North Dakota

Not many of my clients know that for the past several years, I've been holding down the home front and running a business mostly by myself due to my "Mr" working in North Dakota, while we maintained residency in Missoula, Montana. For three years we've lived our lives by "weeks on" and "weeks off". In that time our 3 year old daughter started pre-school, kindergarten, and 1st grade, our newborn boy became a crazy and adorable 3 year old, and we welcomed a 5th member to our family, a beautiful baby girl. In January of this year, my "Mr" was promoted to a position that wouldn't allow for him to come home any more and the decision was made to finally move our whole family over to North Dakota and put all the puzzle pieces back together.

Over the next few months we moved out of our home into a 31' fifth wheel at the KOA and waited for our house in ND to be finished. Surprisingly, living in a fifth wheel with 3 small kids and 2 dogs wasn't as hard as I had imagined it would be. We made some great friends, walked to the park daily, and were right around the corner from my daughters school.

Finally, June arrived and we started prepping for our big move. The day our daughter got out of school was also the day my best friend of 13 years flew in from Oregon to spend a week with us. The first two days of her visit we spent at our last O-Mok-See (horse show) and both the older kids rode so well. During the next several days we went for walks, played in the pool, and enjoyed the sunshine. In the last few days, we spent some time at the river, explored Fort Missoula, and cherished each bittersweet moment we could. Kelly (BFF), bless her heart, wasn't ready to go home and was able to extend her flight another 3 days so she could help us make the move. Thank goodness for her, I don't know if I would have been able to make that 17 hour drive alone!

At last we arrived in North Dakota! We've been here for a little over a week now and things are going well. We've met some nice people, explored some parks, and I've been busy getting back to work. The kids love seeing daddy every day, and for the first time in a long time, I feel whole. So here's to a new life in Williston, North Dakota; may it be full of love, adventure, and success!

Rock the Shot 'Summer Fun' Submission

Summer Fun
June Photo Challenge for Rock The Shot Forum

Summer took it's time arriving in Montana this year. As with every summer though, when it does arrive, beauty abounds. With only a week left in Missoula before our families big move to North Dakota, I took a break from packing to spend a few precious hours with my dear friends, The Nelsons. After a fun adventure of running through the woods and along the river at sunset, we took a few moments to rest in the grass and chat before hopping in our cars and going our separate ways. It was during this time that Reiley discovered a handful of dandelion fluffs and started blowing for all he was worth, sending hundreds of tiny little wisps into the breeze. Thankfully I still had my camera on me and snapped this picture of him surrounded by the floating wisps. Those eyes, by the way, are ALL his. Lock up your daughters!

Jennifer - Glamour

Wife. Mother. Goddess.

If I had to make a list of good qualities I wanted in a friend, I could find them all in my dear friend Jen. I originally met Jen through another friend and we instantly clicked. We had the same values, similar personalities, and a lot in common. Nearly 2 years later and we are closer than ever and our little boys are the very best of friends. Every Tuesday we do Taco Tuesday at our favorite restaurant and on this particular Tuesday, I decided I wanted to do a glamour session with Jen, to show her the inner beauty that radiates from her like the sun. I'm not a glamour photographer, and she's never been the center of attention in portraits, but we both pushed past our comfort zones and created magic. The results boosted my confidence, and I hope they did the same for her! Please enjoy!
